Finding Everything You Need
Fresh out of Harvard in 2010, with all my dreams shining bright, I embarked on an adventure that would shatter my expectations and rewrite my definition of abundance.
The Unexpected Riches of Kayafungo, Kenya
A call from a friend led me to Kayafungo, Kenya – a remote village nestled beneath the African sun. The images of heartbreaking poverty, drought, and despair plagued my mind throughout the flight. What I found instead was a revelation:
Everything.
There was no running water, electricity, or paved roads – yet the people of Kayafungo exuded a joy and love that resonated far deeper than anything I had encountered before. Their wealth was not found in material possessions but in the land’s richness, their community, and an unwavering faith.
In a simple hut with my host, her words imprinted a fundamental truth on my heart: “When you are here with me, it feels like everything is okay.” Walls of mud held a universe of love and connection, reminding me of what we often forget – everything we truly need comes from the earth, from ourselves, and from one another.
The vibrant church in Kuyafungo echoed with joyous singing and unbridled praise. This connection to spirit and community was a stark contrast to the growing disconnect plaguing our modern lives, especially since the isolating effects of COVID. We crave these raw, human experiences – moments of shared vulnerability and connection in the “mud of life.”
Fundamentally, we are social creatures. We yearn to feel the warmth of connection, not the glow of screens. We need to be physically present, one with each other, with the earth, and with the Source that brings us new life.
Simple Practices for Daily Reconnection
So, how can we rediscover this “everything” that resides within and between us? Here are three simple practices to integrate into your daily life:
- Connect with Yourself. Find a quiet spot in nature and simply be. Notice the symphony of sights, sounds, and sensations that surround you. This stillness allows your inner wisdom to surface, guiding you toward a deeper sense of self-awareness.
- Connect with Others. Seek out opportunities for genuine connection. Join a yoga class, call a friend who truly “sees” you, or schedule a coffee date. We are nourished by human connection, so prioritize building it with those who lift you up.
- Seek a Joyful Source. Happiness isn’t a destination; it’s the path. Follow those experiences that bring you joy, relaxation, and a sense of being wholly yourself. Whether dancing, painting, or spending time in nature, prioritize activities that light you up.
Remember, happiness is the path and the way back home. So, let’s rediscover the “everything” that exists within and between us.
