Finding Joy in Any Season
Generally, Coloradans anticipate the rejuvenation and joy the fall season brings to the Rockies. Visibly, we look forward to the addition of crimson and gold colors to the backdrop of the purple (soon-to-be white) mountain peaks.
But what does it truly mean to find joy in the metaphorical sense of changing seasons?
It was a fall much like this one when I gave up drinking alcohol and became “California Sober.” Sitting on my back porch and looking out over beautiful Douglas County, Colorado, I realized that true joy lies in the simple pleasures that nourish our bodies, minds, and spirits. I am inspired by the seasons to live a more balanced and joyful lifestyle.
Embracing the Natural Beauty of Colorado
That might be what you’re looking for, too. It’s simple, and I wanted to share with you some ways that I find this everyday, holistic, true joy in my Colorado life:
- Embrace the changing seasons: Take advantage of the natural landscape around you in spring or fall. Have you heard of forest bathing? Take a hike up on Rampart Range through the vibrant aspens, or find a cozy spot by the South Platte River to soak in the season’s beauty. Nature’s tranquility can soothe your soul and bring a sense of peace.
Culinary Shifts: Seasonal Tastes and Delights
- Allow your taste to change: Are you team Pumpkin Spice or not? The warming aspects of fall flavors are remarkably different from the cool tastes we enjoy in summer. Shift from the taste of citrus blends to warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, from watermelon to pumpkin or other savory squash, from ceviche to chili.
Finding Time for Personal Growth
- Use your time differently: I almost feel guilty for saying this as a working parent with teens and a toddler, but find a new book or podcast. My SIL gave me Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird, and I am savoring it. Allowing yourself to immerse your mind in something other than caretaking is full of joy. Could you schedule the time on your calendar? HOT TIP: Take an extra 15 minutes on your daily/ weekly grocery run to sit silently in the car, with or without your book. Whether you read it is up to you!
- Notice your changing thoughts: Even in the busiest moments, take a deep breath and allow your thoughts and feelings to pass like the weather. Practicing mindfulness doesn’t take more time out of your day but can add joy and calm.
Celebrating Seasonal Traditions and Activities
- Celebrate what is unique in this season: Pumpkin patches and corn mazes are obvious seasonal retreats for families. But what about Vinotok in Crested Butte or Ullr Fest in Breckenridge? These rituals acknowledge letting go of seasons passed and celebrating what is to come.
Enhancing Your Home & Community Connections This Season
- Create a seasonal change in your space: Transform your home into a cozy sanctuary with warm blankets, candles, and your favorite autumnal incense or oils. Check out these fall blends.
- Change who you spend time with: They say you are most like those you spend time with. Consider changing your scenery. Give back to your community by volunteering at a local charity or organization. The feeling of making a difference can bring immense joy and fulfillment.
- Try a seasonal activity: Step outside your comfort zone and try a new activity, such as apple picking, leaf-peeping, or cross-country skiing in the winter. Embrace the spirit of adventure and discover something new about yourself.
- Change your mindset: Consider exploring the benefits of plant-based remedies and supplements. Plant medicine can be a valuable tool for finding holistic joy and well-being.
Remember, finding joy is about nurturing all aspects of yourself. Sometimes, I find genuine happiness at Taco Bell and do not feel guilty or ashamed for saying that. Your experience doesn’t have to be shaped by what is trendy or whether or not others find joy the way you do. Happiness in your life, whatever the activity, can create a more balanced and fulfilling life in any season.
